Multisite can mean one of, or a combination of the following:*
--* multiple domains (abc.com.au + xyz.org) pointing to the same webroot 
on a server*
--* (and) using sites/mydomain.com.au to have settings.php and different 
modules/themes
-- (so that) they may share the same drupal core codebase
-- (or with the same or different codebase) they might use the same database
-- (and even) have their own tables but share some tables.

The permutations of the above mean that "multisite" often means 
something different. In the case of www.slf.or.au they are (probably) 
using the same codebase and all using the same database but not sharing 
all table.
