One of the reasons we are pursuing multiple revenue streams for the Drupal
association is that donations don't work everybody.

In the forum post a Drupal evangelist pointed out that he was active in
promoting Drupal in Ghana, but that he has no access to international
payment networks. If we only offer one way to contribute to the Drupal
association then we exclude many people in Africa, eastern Europe, and any
other countries that PayPal hasn't been permitted to operate in.

Many people would like to make donations, but they would like some benefits
in return. We believe that there may be tax implications for offering
benefits to donors. However, offering benefits to association members seems
to be fine.

27% of the respondents to the membership pricing survey are individual
business owners. Their business models don't allow them the profits to
necessarily make a donation or buy a Drupal Association membership.
However, they might be willing to click an affiliate link when purchasing
hosting for their customers. That type of contribution works for a certain
segment of our community.

Today, people are going out of their way to to come to the Drupal web site
before buying Drupal books on Amazon. Each purchase gives us an affiliate
payment and soon it could be enough to buy a new web server. This has been
up for months, and yet there have no complaints. I don't know exactly why
their haven't been no complaints, but I suspect that it's because those ads
were useful to members of the Drupal community, and they were placed in
relevant sections of Drupal web properties so that no one found them
offensive.

Cheers,
Kieran

+1 for an ad-free d.o.
