I have never been anywhere that didn't claim ownership of intellectual rights. However, most places are also willing to accept a sponsorship mention for contributing back to Drupal. Just make sure you have a paper trail.

Another factor to consider is the 15% rule. Most shops don't want you to do all the stuff you would do for contributing to DO, such as translation, Drupal coding standards, full-blown install/uninstall/update code, etc. Once you get through doing all that, you probably meet the 15% difference rule. But in the end, you probably want to stay out of court even if you would win.
