Hi,

OpenLDAP is surely a good choice. But:

There are a large number of choices to make when considering an LDAP server
(regardless the type) to use with Drupal.

Questions arise like:
- Is LDAP hosted and managed at the company where you implementing Drupal?
- Is the company already familiar with LDAP?
- Does the company use Microsoft servers?
- Where are you planning to host the LDAP ? (separate server, existing
server)
- What are the number of users and groups?
- What are the characteristic of the users (frequency of loggings, password
changes, group)
- Integration with back office systems (in future)

I guess you have looked at http://drupal.org/project/ldap_integration.
I think:
- You need a good testing plan
- You need to have requirements regarding why you need an LDAP server
- Make a (small) design
- Look again at openID and openauth.
- Look at performance issues and potential maintenance issues

Maikel
