Hi, I've seen small open mailman lists with half of the subscribers consisting of spam bots.  some with "spam" or "spamtest" in their email address, and others pretending to be "normal", but unknown people with weird/suspicious domains.  Hopefully on a larger list like this one, the ratio of human to spambot would be better ;)  The spam bots didn't seem to cause a problem for me thanks to greylisting, spamassassin, etc.
