What I am also wondering is whether contributing themes, modules or bug
fixes/additions to core is considered equally important or is valued
equally as "proof of your commitment" to Drupal?<br>

In all honesty, it's nice, but its not huge. It helps somewhat in
marketing, but only if you can duplicate it or produce the same
quality of work.
