Hi all,

I have a nonprofit client -- with limited budget -- that has a need to
collect a lot of data on their constituents around the country.

Drupal is perfect for collecting this data, but here's the catch. They need
the ability to generate reports based on this data, such as graphic
representations, things Views doesn't do.

I told them they'd be able to export a spreadsheet and then run reports, but
they want the ability to run reports and crunch numbers right form the site.

Have any of you run into this or have any suggestions? I'm wondering if
there might be some third party options that I may be able to integrate. Or
perhaps some sort of software that I can install on the server that can read
right from the database (of course, I'd have to teach it CCK logic)

Or if there's a non-drupal solution that anyone knows of, that would be
helpful too.

Thanks,
Sam
I recently built a reporting solution for the client using drupal and
jasper. We had clearly defined reports so we used iReports to design
the reports and generate a jrxml file. This jrxml file is used to
generate the reports every weekend via a cron job. I used ant based
scripts to run Jasper server and generate the reports in pdf.
Sam,

There are a couple of approaches to this project. Both Postgres &
MySQL support ODBC drivers for Windows access to Drupal
databases. I'm guessing that your client is using/wants to use
Excel for their reports. Excel can connect to the Drupal database
via the ODBC driver.

Another approach for pure reporting would be to use somthing like
Business Objects over ODBC to create the needed reports.

Using Java, there's BIRT through Eclipse too.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Having used CiviCRM fairly extensively, I was going to reply that they have
minimal reporting capability, but I decided to check out their site first
and to my surprise there's now CiviReport http://civicrm.org/civireport ,
which I assume is part of the new 3.0 release. (or somehow I missed it in
2.0)

That may be exactly what I'm looking for. CiviCRM really is a pretty
amazing project. My only problem with it, as a consultant, is the enormous
learning curve there is for clients and the amount of training I need to
build in.
