HAH! I win! ;)

When I was installing Gallery, this came up:

" All multisites are installed from this central code repository (codebase).
Enter the directory for the new multisite below. The path must be different from this codebase installation's path: "

So codebase is OK! Also, I think it has value as a term that is not so commonly used that it's confusing, it has base, which implies a central location, and just sounds good.

We'll go with that.

chinami ni, a kind kind gentleman offered his own multi site docs, and a friend has also offered his expertise, so many of the holes have been filled, they just need to be rewritten.

Your shady past comes to light. ;)

Subdirectories don't have a lot to do with anything in this case.

Also, once the term "installation tree" is introduced, it can be
shortened to "tree," which is distinctive, but shortening "installation
directory" to "directory" is likely to be more confusing.

I agree with this directory thing. Too many people have folder issues, drupal is installed in sub directories, sub domains, subdomains that are folders, etc. So, like I said, we can go for the clause, 'where drupal is installed', and avoid the whooooole thing all together. Alternatively, drupal root, if you must.
