Hello folks,

I don't think the upgrading handbook pages make clear enough the distinction in the routine of upgrading between "major" upgrades and "point" upgrades (are there better words for that?)

I'm going to embark on a page that focusses exclusively on "point" upgrades. In The meantime I made the following change to one paragraph only of the page the upgrading tutorial page. Let me know if you think I got it wrong in any way.

The page:
http://drupal.org/upgrade/tutorial-introduction

The way it was:

NOTE: You should check to see if the contributed modules you rely on
have been upgraded as well. Old versions of modules will not run on an
upgraded version of Drupal (e.g 4.7 modules do not work on a Drupal 5.x
site).

The way it is now:

NOTE: Before deciding to perform a major upgrade ( e.g. 4.6.5 - 4.7.11,
4.7.11 - 5.7, 5.7 - 6.0), you should check to see if the contributed
modules you rely on have a version that was written for the version of
Drupal you are upgrading to. Old versions of modules will not run on an
upgraded version of Drupal (e.g 4.7 modules do not work on a Drupal 5.x
site). This need to attend to your contributed modules in advance of an
upgrade does not apply to "point" upgrades (e.g. 4.6.4 - 4.6.5, 4.7.9 -
4.7.11, 5.6 - 5.7, 6.0 Rc 3 - 6.0)

One of my concerns here is that site managers are reticent to perform "point" upgrades because they think it's a big deal, or they aren't quite sure if they have to perform a point upgrade with all the same diligence/hassle of a major upgrade.

I'll let you know when I've started the page on "point" upgrades. In the meantime, any feedback on this change or suggestions, are welcome.

Thanks,

Shai
