Thanks for the reply Bèr. If I missed something please let me know.

I used portupgrade, which completed with no errors. I checked the PHP 
site and didn't see any special instructions on the site or in the 
changelog. FWIW, the portupgrade procedure worked fine on a similar 
server (same versions of FreeBSD, Apache, and PHP) that uses 
Squirrelmail instead of Drupal.

I'm trusting that port maintainer got it right. Apache worked after the 
upgrade, as did a phpinfo() test page, and the home page for the Drupal 
site.

No change in permissions, and the apache user "www" has rwx on the 
/usr/local/www/data directory.
