Edit the forum post in question and remove the check on "Promoted to front 
page" in the Options box, then submit.

To set this permanently for the future, go to admin/node/configure/types/forum 
(administer -> content -> configure -> content types -> forum topic  
configure) and remove the check on "Promoted to front page" in the Workflow 
box, Default options group, then Save configuration.
