Dave,

BTW,  how does one go about modifying the login block .. or is that a  
themes list question?  Also, I'm happy to contribute to updating it  
to 4.7 .. will help me learn the innards of drupal better, not to  
mention get the site I'm working on authenticating the way I want it to.
