[support] Image Nightmare

Image Nightmare: my image directory has thousands of image files.  I
just realized they have been multiplying themselves.

Some files. but not all, goes like this.
<filename>_1.jpg
.
.
<filename>_197.jpg
Yet the live image is still <filename>.jpg.  This file was uploaded long
time ago, and the related nodes has not been modified at all.  The time
stamp of between the increments are 4+ hours, but is not matching to the
cron runtime.

What is causing this?  Any suggestion would be appreciated.
