[support] OT: how to do a drop down search box?

It depends on what you want to select from the dropdown box.

node type?
taxonomy term?
vocabulary name?
author?

etc...

If you set up a filter that will search the fields you're interested  
in, you can then expose the filter to the user (in the block).
