[support] modifying login block - how?

I notice that a lot of users are getting failed logins using their email
addresses. That might have been how they logged in on the old site.
Typically the next thign in the log is a new user for the same name. Is
there a way to allow the email to work as well as user name? Or if not, can
I just add text to the login block that says "to log in, please enter your
user name, not your email"?
