[support] Last Reply Time Format

How can I change the date format of the "Last Reply" column in a forum 
from "2 days 22 hours ago" to "11/02/08 11.01am"?

I just edited

function _forum_format($topic) {

in forum.module as I see no other way. Is there a better way?
