[support] Connecting to external databases

Dear List,

I am using D5 and want to display records from an external (to Drupal,
i.e. not the database that stores the Drupal information) data table.
Can someone point me to how to do this?  What modules might be handy?  I
know a little about CCK but don't see how to connect the fields created
there with another data table.
