[support] Admin pages not working - login makes site "freeze"

Dear Earnie,

Thanks very much - I greatly appreciate your help. In fact it was a 
mysterious .htaccess problem, which I circumvented by going in to the 
admin section manually via the address bar, as though clean urls weren't 
specified. I am currently doing a much needed update to newer versions 
of core and modules.
