Thank you for your quick response.  I am still getting the same error  
after modifying as you suggested, and update.php, and rebuild  
permission:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 34340864) (tried to allocate  
690495 bytes) in
/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 301

The exact number is a little different, but does it say anything?
