There are two easy ways to handle this without coding.
1. Make sure that the pagebreak is at the end of the end all the content for
the news.
2. Use views to create a custom front page and you can hide the read more
link. Here are some good instructions for that -

Hi, I'm working for a site where in the front page there will be only the
last "news" that user have inserted. I have set 1 for "Number of posts on
main page:" in the node-settings page
(admin/content/node-settings)
Now in front page I have last node inserted but with "read more" link and
the "paginator". See file attached.
How can I remove them ?
