I fumbled my way along with Drupal for 1.5+ years, and then "Using
Drupal" came out:

I now have a much better understanding of what Drupal can and cannot do
OOTB, and where to look to find answers.  I recommend that you get a
copy and work through the examples.  I used one VMware virtual machine
for each chapter; there are WAMP alternatives as well.
