On debian ‘lenny’: ‘apt-cache show drupal6’ gives me the following
dependencies:

  debconf (>= 0.5) | debconf-2.0, apache2 | httpd, php5,
  php5-mysql | php5-pgsql, php5-gd, ... etc.

How did you install drupal?

Unless the Ubuntu drupal package is buggy, an ‘apt-get install’ should
have pulled in php5-mysql. If it did not, possibly less obvious things
may have gone wrong as well, and you may run into other problems further
on.

Not that I disagree with the other two posters who wrote that an
‘apt-get install php5-mysql’ is probably the way to go at this point.

But it wouldn't hurt to take a look at the apt logs in /var/log/apt/ and
see if there are any unusual messages.
