Hm, a user of drupalcenter.de reported the same a few days ago.
We tested with 72.000 words (!) and got no error (Drupal 6.15, Apache on 
Windows, Linux and Mac; memory_limit between 96MB and 128MB).

Did you look into watchdog if an entry about creating the new node has 
been logged?
