Because if you look at it, and it's not up to date, you basically know the security holes in the site. It's not fool proof (as you've just demonstrated), but still.

Why should one remove it? Which DrupalCon. (I also need that psych!).
I have been running drush pm-update and getting the successful message that 7.12 updated to 7.15 but when I look it is still 7.12.
