Sorry, I should have included more of a demonstration of the issue
  ..
  from my user root :

  bash-3.2$ drush sql-query 'show table;'
  No database to operate on.

  To be expected...

from my site root - deliberate error

  /Users/http/sites/akwebsoft
  bash-3.2$ drush sql-query 'show nothing;'
ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 1: You have an error in your SQL
syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server
version for the right syntax to use near 'nothing' at line 1

  Also to be expected
  now a valid command :

  bash-3.2$ drush sql-query 'show tables;'
  bash-3.2$

  Where's the output??
