<div class=Section1>
<p class=MsoNormal><b>Hello,</b><br>
I’m having permissions problems. I’m following the warnings
from Druapl, making the fixes – but the warnings and fixes just seem to
go in a loop.<br>
I had a new install of D6 and was installing a few modules. After hitting
“save” it brought me to the Drupal D6 install page (which was
confusing). I clicked on “install” and I received the warning
message about making the file “<em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>./sites/default/settings.php”
</span></em><em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";font-style:
normal'>from</span></em><em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'> “./sites/default/default.settings.php”.
</span></em><em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";font-style:
normal'>This was more confusing as I’d already created that file.<o:p></o:p></span></em></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
font-style:normal'><o:p> </o:p></span></em></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
font-style:normal'>I messed about with it for a while, and things seem to
change based on the directory permissions. Anyhow, it was a new enough
install that I figured I’d just delete the DB, create a new DB and
reinstall D6, but I seem to still be getting similar permissions problems. <br>
<br>
If I have the permissions set to “777” for the following
directories and files<br>
<br>
<o:p></o:p></span></em></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>./sites/default/<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>.sites/default/files/settings.php<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>then I can proceed with the setup, but get this warning:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console";color:red'>“All
necessary changes to <em><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>./sites/default</span></em>
and <em><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>./sites/default/settings.php</span></em>
have been made, so you should remove write permissions to them now in order to
avoid security risks.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>If I follow those directions and set the file and directory
to “444” and refresh, I get this warning:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>“-
The Drupal installer requires that you create a settings file as part of the
installation process. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<ol start=1 type=1>

file to <em><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>./sites/default/settings.php</span></em>.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;
mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1'><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>Change
file permissions so that it is writable by the web server. <o:p></o:p></span></li>
</ol>
<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span
style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>- The directory <em><span
style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>sites/default/files</span></em> does not
exist. An automated attempt to create this directory failed, possibly due to a
permissions problem. To proceed with the installation, either create the
directory and modify its permissions manually, or ensure that the installer has
the permissions to create it automatically.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>At this point, I find that have to set the permissions of
the “default” directory and “settings.php” to “777”
make the above warning go away. (no other RWE combo seems to work.. only “777”)
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Anyhow, after changing the permissions to “777”
, I get the previous warning again: <br>
<span style='font-family:"Lucida Console";color:red'>“All necessary
changes to <em><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>./sites/default</span></em>
and <em><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'>./sites/default/settings.php</span></em>
have been made, so you should remove write permissions to them now in order to
avoid security risks.”</span><span style='font-family:"Lucida Console"'><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><br>
<br>
It just seems to be going in an endless loop. I’ve installed D6
several times, but never had this happen. Any idea what is going on?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
