You could try using the module String Overrides, if you just want to quickly change what's on the front page without worrying about coding anything. I'm not familiar with the Announcements module, however, so I don't know exactly how it works.<div>

I've tried hiding divs before (although I didn't think of it here), and those weird little browsers have alwayse been problematic.<br>
