I would suggest http://drupal.org/project/cufon (with http://aaronwinborn.com/blogs/aaron/cufón-alternative-sifr-image-replacement as an example of how you could put it directly in your theme w/o depending on a module).

SIFR is the other well-known example. I'm sure there are others.
