I'd just like to make an observation of dww's recent statement: "Without a D6 version of views, drupal.org will not be able to upgrade to D6. Without a d.o upgrade, 6.0 will not be released." To me, this means that Views is "the core component that isn't shipped with core." I am not advocating any particular action in response to this observation. Barry

So is Project.

Not that this really matters, but, I disagree... Views is the core component that isn't shipped with core since basically every drupal site on earth uses it. It's going to be more true for D6, since d.o itself will also be using it, but that fact doesn't make it part of core. Project is in the critical path to the next core release, due to our policy of eating our own dogfood, but no one in their right mind should consider it part of core. ;) Relatively speaking, a vanishingly small fraction of drupal sites would want to install and use this suite of modules, even though drupal.org does. I think there's a big difference. YMMV, and I really don't want to fuel a "debate" on something with no action items at all. No matter how you choose to think of it, 6.0 won't ship without a D6 version of views and project*, so if you have time and energy to help, please spend it on those efforts. That's where the action is. ;) Cheers, -Derek (dww)

Actions is in core now. *runs* -- Larry Garfield AIM: LOLG42 larry@garfieldtech.com ICQ: 6817012 "If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it." -- Thomas Jefferson
Well, Views is now ascending to that wonderful status that Project module has so long had: couldn't run d.o. without it. This is still somewhat different than "Drupal core". We couldn't run d.o. without cvs either. Barry Jaspan wrote:

As indicated earlier, I'm _all_ for incorporating more of CCK and Views into core. Let's make a concentrated effort for that in D7. It doesn't mean that _all_ of CCK/Views needs to be in core, but certainly the stable and critical parts should, IMO. -- Dries Buytaert :: http://www.buytaert.net/

At the very least, i believe we should have the ability to have default views and cck types in a hook, for use with install profiles. for instance, exporting views to a hook_views_default_views()
