Re: [development] Is DRUPAL-5 branch necessary for module?
All- As one of the developers who harassed Derek recently ( http://drupal.org/node/108635), let me say a few nice things about him. 1) His documentation is excellent. I never had problems with releases; my problems were with version control (HEAD means what?). 2) Even at my dumbest, he was patient and encouraging. The Drupal community is remarkably good at not discouraging novice developers even when refusing (rightly so) to solve their every minor problem. And I owe Derek several beers. - Ken Rickard agentrickard
Great discussion. Here's what I'm seeing: Branch EARLY - Branch as soon as development begins on a new version. E1. Convention and consistency require branching early E2. CVS downloader's prefer branches Branch LATE - Tag in MAIN and Branch only when needed (bugfixes, etc.) L1. Saves work for module developers with only 1 branch to maintain Although it's not really enforced, E1 alone convinces me to Branch EARLY. With hundreds of modules available Convention and Consistency rule the day. Craig
I hate to sound elitist, but maybe one of the problems is the ease with which hundreds(?) of people have obtained CVS accounts? If you either (1) don't know what you are doing with CVS, or (2) are not willing to learn how to use it without bugging Derek, then maybe you shouldn't have a CVS account? Derek has busted his butt to make our development infrastructure much better, and having been around that block a few times in my relatively long career, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, it also means his head is standing out above the crowd which makes him a frequent target for questions. I know I'd want to ask him if I had a question, although I try real hard to refrain from doing that. :-)

Certainly not. "Willing to learn (basic) CVS" is implied when applying for an account.

He has written enough docs, so questions shouldn't be needed. Cheers, Gerhard
