Hi Bill thanks for the tip, is this a best practice for the type of thing I'm trying to do or would there still be a better way to do it?

Hacking core code is a one way path to much pain, as all your
modifications will either prevent an upgrade (if you want to keep your
changes in place) or will get wiped out during an upgrade (as your old
codebase will be overwritten with the new codebase).
Use the locale module -- this allows you to translate/edit strings to
change this type of value. The handbooks have pretty good documentation
on this.
