use the views module to create the lists as blocks and place them in a region and set them only to display on the homepage.

I know I can do this, I am just trying to wrap my mind around it. I am developing a theme / website for a media outlet. They need a column for recent articles and a column for recent videos on the home page. They need to be fed blog-style as they are published.
What is the best way to go about this?
