Leslie, it is possible/likely (???) that functionality you desire will be built right into core for Drupal 7. See this article:

Is there a way to force Drupal to link to a document on our network file system, without actually uploading it into the Drupal database? We have hundreds of documents that we'd like to link to (this is for our employee intranet site, not an external site) rather than having to upload each one.
