I have a field collection defined. In my view I create a relationship to the collection. Now, the fields in the collection appear in the fields select. I select them, the relationship is shown, and save the view.
In template.php in THEME_preprocess_views_view_fields when I dump $variables['view'] I get the usual multitude of data, but not any of the collection fields or their contents.
