I’m using the Glossary module for something similar, although
it’s not really intended for that.

CCK to the rescue! Create a field for each type of reference you need for the
content type you are using.
Using contemplate or by customizing
the relevant .tpl file in your theme, you can make those fields present on
your node exactly how you want them.
