You should be able to make an SMTP connection to Sendgrid, Mandrill, Amazon SES etc. Mandrill as an example has a module that lets you see email data right in Drupal.
Another thing is makr sure once you have a mail server you add an SPF record to your DNS information.

Many times mails I send, does not reach destination, sometimes reaching after a delay of 1 hour, sometimes mailserver ip is blacklisted all sort of issues.
