Could Cache'ing be your
issue?
I'm a Drupal novice - so
this is just a quick thought from the peanut gallery.
Have you looked at your
Cache settings. The Apress book says Drupal defaults this to on, but I've
noticed Caching disabled in all of our installs.
Let me know if this
turns out to the issue.

We've run into problems with sites
running on Site5, where they
claimed Drupal was using too much server
resources, even with
virtually no traffic. However, others have been
running sites on
Site5 with no problem so our experience does not seem to
have been
typical.
