Font support on the web has classically been a huge hinderance to designers because of OS limitations. Various workaround have evolved over time (Image replacement, sIFR, cufon, etc). The best solution in terms of ease, performance, and accessibility at present is CSS @font-face rules.
This is sort of what I was looking for I think. A bit more leeway in styling themes.
