You need mod_rewrite enabled in your httpd.

I have mod rewrite  enable in httpd, and rewrite works fine on my
default site.

Should i add something somewhere to enable it for the other sites
aswell? aperently it dosn't work out of the box, or (more likely) I have
missed something in the configuration.

    

You did execute the test in the administration setup correct?  If yes, 
then perhaps a configuration issue with virtual host.
