Have you check Advanced User[1]? It still has problems with the profile fields but what you explain here is functioning.

Did you check http://drupal.org/project/mass_contact? I've tried out recently several modules for the same purpose: finding the most simple module that just can send an email to all registered users and found that one as the most easy one. Good luck, Hans www.koba.be

In the end I just manually typed in usernames and addresses into an address book in The Bat!, sent the email to myself and BCC'd the list. I can manually update the list as (if!) new members join. As I'm running this site for my local doctor's practice I'm loathe to stray too far from the core modules unless I'm confident that contributed modules are robust and need little tweaking. It does seem to me that a *simple* facility to send a message to one's members is needed. It need do nothing else, no bells, no whistles just send a message to all authenticated users.
