Just adding that didn't work anywhere. 

I'm still open to any other suggestions....

try something like this:

put this at the top of the node.tpl.php or wherever you need it...

<?php format_date($node->created, 'custom', 'D M d Y') ?>

hope it helps... i actually have almost no idea what i'm talking about
and its 3am!!!!!
