Not sure if this is a 'how' or a 'what' comment, but I one thing that
will reduce the workload of maintaining this type of project is the
new install system (4.8?).

It will almost certainly become possible to setup any drupal
distribution by simply installing core and the one module that
represents the distribution you require (e.g. drupalcom, civicspace
etc). The depends system can then install all the required
modules/themes, and a post-install hook can configure any settings,
themes etc needed for that distribution.

What can I say...I suspect we will see a lot more distributions,
targeted at very specific audiences, once this is up and running!
