My only thought is that NYC is expensive.  I would be interested in
joining this event, but less so in NYC.  It is nice to do these events
as a bookend to a conference that people might already be in town for,
but ideal to do them in a time/place where people are already going to
be and where cost of living is lower.

Just my $.02 (note: adjusted for NYC purchasing power parity that's
about $.01...)
