Actually I think it's:

Groups 	-> Content (DB) -> Mail
	      	-> Content (DB) -> RSS
		-> Content (DB) -> Mailing List

Mail is nice, as notification of what's being posted, but it's not a  
conversation.
RSS is nice, as I can't filter on groups at weitzman.tejasa.com and  
subject line filtering doesn't work in mail.
Mailing lists are conversations and that's what you want in a group.   
I won't be logging onto http://groups.drupal.org through out the day  
to respond to the 9 different groups I am part of.  I'll just browse  
the groups a few times a week.

What we are having right now is a group discussion.
