This exact situation happened to a friend of mine -- he has a domain 
name (which, ironically, is his actual name) where the registrar went 
belly-up -- he has control over the dns servers, but he is in the 
unenviable position now of having to jump through hoops to regain 
control over his domain because the registrar disappeared.
