[consulting] Do you get a lot of D5 to D6 porting projects?

We have had a few of these jobs, and we have largely approached them
from the perspective of an upgrade paired with architectural
improvements. Views2 has been a factor, as have improvements in the
theming layer.
Most of our clients have had such a large amount of legacy data/userbase
that starting over from scratch wasn't an option. Depending on the size
of the site, we have recommended reworking the theme be a separate phase
from any architectural changes and the actual codebase upgrade.
And a final note on Views2: we have generally reworked the views by
hand. Given the improvements between Views and Views2, we have been able
to simplify the codebase for clients by using this process. In some
cases, this allowed us to eliminate custom code that had been required
in the D5 sites. Additionally, we took advantage of the ability to
export views as a module to move the views from dev to qa to production.
So, our upgrades have been entirely codebase upgrade plus architectural
changes plus theming improvements.
Cheers,
Bill
