Here is the directory of Acquia partners :
http://acquia.com/partners/directory. I believe Acquia has to refer work to
one of these partners the way their partner program is setup. This may have
changed and Acquia may have started consulting i.e generating services
revenues.

You still have to do your due diligence by checking on the partner you
choose. There are some very good ones in the partner directory like Raincity
Studios, pingVision, Chapter Three, Trellon and ImageX Media in there who
have been in Drupal business for a long time developing many many sites
while on the other hand there are also a handful of new entrants in the
list.

Many other quality providers like Lullabot, Development Seed, 2Bits, Achieve
Internet, aWebfactory, Advomatic and many others are not in the list but
are very good.

A quick check to know about a provider is

a) Check the age of the domain name from whois record (
http://www.network-tools.com )
b) Check their drupal.org age of user name (you can ask if you don't find it
by searching), their involvement in community, etc
c) Check their credentials by speaking to their clients
d) Ask them about their bad experiences and how they dealt with them.

Everyone likes to talk about good things in business. Some people will also
share their bad experiences and show honesty on how they deal when things
don't work out and how they helped a customer or how they dealt with a bad
situation, etc.
