Hello, Sam,
As part of our Knight Drupal Initiative work, we will be releasing some
work that makes some, and possibly all, of what you describe possible.
We have been working with the Hexagon theme, and integrating that with
Skinr. One of the goals of Hexagon is to simplify and streamline the
process of building out subthemes. Hex also supports functionality
embedded within regions; the subtheme that ships with hex provides
tabbed regions and accordion regions in both the sidebar and the main
content areas.
The theme we will release as part of our KDI work will also include
classes for Views-based slideshows (leveraging the Views Slideshow
module) - the classes for this can be added via the ui using Skinr.
We're a couple days away from getting a screencast together that shows
the amount of flexibility this offers.
Additionally, within the base theme, we have broken out the CSS for some
of the more basic design elements, so that the general color options and
font treatments can be easily modified.
Hexagon, and the base theme Canvas, are now both available on
drupal.org: http://drupal.org/project/hexagon - We're using the 1.x
release of Skinr; while the 2.x branch has some great new functionality,
given that we are building an install profile we opted to be
conservative and go for a point release.
Cheers,
Bill
