Also, something I learned in a little bit of a heard way, its best to start
with a federal ID (EIN). This way you give your EIN to companies who need to
give you a W9 rather than your SSN. Once again a CPA is a good investment.

I think in the US -- but not sure -- if you operate under your own name (Lee
Consulting) you don't have to formally register as a business. You can use
your own social and you would be a sole proprietor. (however, there might
be local requirements, such as getting a business license from your city,
county, etc)

If you operate under another name, you generally need to register. Probably
the best advice I can give if you are going to do it full time is to get a
CPA who understands and advises you to file taxes as an S corp. This can
save you thousands of dollars a year which can easily make up for the cost
of an accountant.

Becoming an independent contractor has lots of legal implications on both
the state and federal level in the United States if that is where you are.
It is probably best that you consult your jurisdiction about what they
require. Colorado for example does business registrations through the
Secretary of State office. An attorney and tax accountant are good resources
in this process. I know this is not an answer with real answers but
hopefully this will give you an idea where to look..oh ya and my attorney
requires me to say that I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice.
