My personal belief is that site credits are valid (to be asked for and given) when a seasoned, skilled developer is working at a rate far below their normal one, essentially acting in support of a company or organization - donating a portion of their time (in the form of reduced rates) to build for them. I think this practice is perfectly acceptable under those circumstances. In other situations, I believe it's a matter of personal negotiation, but I would say that it's both a practice that's going out of style and also a little unprofessional if the engagement was for regular-price. In that circumstance, I would say that doing a d.o. case study is a far better route for all concerned.
